First 100º+ Day In Phoenix

The first 100º+ day of the year in Phoenix is guaranteed to happen every year, and this year was no exception! At 2:12pm on May 7th, the temperature reached the 100º mark. If you don't like the heat, at least this year was well past the average of May 2nd, and the latest first 100º+ day since 2010!

Looking at the long-term record (since 1896), the latest first 100º day was back in 1913, when we held off until June 18th! The earliest on record was in 1988, when we had the pleasure of hitting the century mark on March 26th.

Record-setting first 90º+ day in Phoenix

Phoenix Sky Harbor hit 90º for the first time this year around 1:18 pm on March 25th, but the thermometer did not stop there. It continued rising until reaching a high of 96º, which broke the record for the day of 93º set back in 1988.

A fun fact, this is the second warmest high temperature on record to be measured on the first 90º+ day. The hottest first 90º+ day comes in at 97º, which occurred in 1946 and 2019.

And if you were wondering, the average first 90º+ day is March 30th.

Forecast: First 90º+ day of the year is likely in Phoenix on Friday

High pressure will build over Arizona later this week into the weekend, resulting in well above average high temperatures. The forecast high on Friday in Phoenix is currently 92º, which would make it the first time this year with a high of 90º+.

The average first 90º+ day is March 30th, with the earliest on record occurring on February 17th in 2016.

The good news if you don't like the heat, a slight chance of rain and cooler temperatures will move into the forecast at the start of next week!

Record-setting start to December in Phoenix with a high of 85º

It might be December, but this afternoon the high was 85º, which is the average high we usually see at the end of October! This high also broke the record for the day, with the old record being 83º set in 1949.

Temperatures at or above 85º in December are very rare. In fact, there have only been three other times since 1896 where the high in December was 85º+. It happened two times in 1980 (86º on December 16th and 85º on December 26th) and one time in 1950 (87º on December 10th).

There is good news on the horizon with slightly cooler temperatures, albeit still above average, moving into the weather picture by the weekend.

Phoenix: Record number of 80º+ days in November

On the last day of November in Phoenix, the high was 80º, making it the 25th day during the month with a high of 80º or higher. This breaks the record for the most 80º+ days during the month. The old record was 24 days set back in 1949!

The top years for November include: 25 days: 2021 24 days: 1949 23 days: 2017 21 days: 1932 20 days: 2012, 1981, 1954

As for the least number of days with a high of 80º+ in November, that record is zero and has happened 4 times (1920, 1938, 1957 and 2000).

Also, if you are keeping track, the high of 80º on November 30th was 10º above the average for this time of year and marks the 191st above-average high temperature day so far this year. Some good news, this is better than last year, as at this same time in 2020, we were at 224 days that recorded an above-average high.

First low below 50º in Phoenix this season!

The low temperature at Phoenix Sky Harbor bottomed out at 49º during the morning of Sunday, November 28th. This low temperature marks the first time this fall with a low below 50 degrees.

If you thought it was a little late, you would be right; this year ties as the fourth latest on record. The latest on record is December 7th, which occurred in 2017. On the flip side, the earliest on record is September 20th, which occurred in 1965.

So is the first below 50 degree low temperature of the spring season getting later? Looking at data from 1896 to current (graph above), the answer is yes. The 30-year rolling average in 1925 had the first below 50-degree day occurring around October 17th. Using the last 30 years (including this year), the average is around November 13th.

November heat continues in Phoenix

It has been a warm November in Phoenix, with every day (through November 20th) seeing a high of 80º or higher, which has not happened since records began in 1896.

As for the total number of 80º+ days in November, that record stands at 24 and was set in 1949. So far this month, we are at 20 days, which stands as the 4th most for the month of November.

Phoenix sets a new record with three days below 85º in July!

It was a "cold" July weekend in Phoenix, with a high temperature of 83º on Friday and Saturday and a high of 81º on Sunday. This three-day streak broke the record for the most consecutive days with a high below 85º in July. The old record was two consecutive days set in 1955 and 1911.

This also breaks the record for the most number of 85º or below high temperatures recorded throughout the month. The old record was two days also set in 1955 and 1911.

The high temperature of 81º on Sunday was the coolest July day since July 24, 1955! Keep in mind the average high temperature for this time of year is right around 106º.

Coolest July day in Phoenix since 1964!

Many of us were focused on the record-setting rain that moved through the Phoenix valley, but the temperatures were rather impressive as well!

The high temperature at Phoenix Sky Harbor on Friday , July 23rd was only 83º, which is the coolest July day since 1964! To put this into context, the average low temperature for this time of year is 85º, so the high temperature was even below the average low temperature! This is also only the 11th time since records began in 1896 that the high temperature has been at or below 83º during the month of July.

In case you were wondering, the coolest July day on record stands at 79º, which occurred on July 1, 1911.

Phoenix: First 100º+ day of 2021

The first 100º day of the year signals the unofficial start to summer, and this year, it happened right around 2:15 pm on May 5th.

Using the new 1991-2020 thirty-year averages, the average first 100º+ day occurs on May 2nd. The earliest 100º+ day occurred on March 26th back in 1988, and the latest was in 1913 when it held off until June 18th!

And if you thought this was a little late compared to recent years, you would be right. This is the latest first 100º day since May 21, 2010.

The Valley of the Sun averages 111 days a year with a high of 100º+, so looking at the positive side, only about 110 more days to go!
