Phoenix sets record for largest December temperature drop

- Posted in Weather Records by

On December 9th, the high temperature was a warm 80º in Phoenix. One day later, on December 10th, the high temperature topped out at just 61º. That's a 19º drop in only one day, which sets the record as the largest one-day high-temperature drop in December for Phoenix. The old record was an 18º drop set back in 1928, when the temperature went from 71º on December 11th to 53º on December 12th.

How does this match up to the biggest temperature drop using all months? That record is a drop of 27º and has happened twice. In 1951, the high temperature went from 100º on August 26th down to 73º on August 27th. And in 1905, the high went from 77º on November 20th to 50º on November 21st. With that said, the 19º drop we just had will go down as the 9th all-time largest temperature drop.

If you were wondering, the largest temperature increase from one day over the next occurred back in 1989, when the high temperature went from 58º on January 1st to 79º on January 2nd. Looking at just December, the largest increase was back in 1968, with a temperature rise of 15º.

Ok, that's all the time we have for fun weather facts today!

Phoenix hits 80º for the second time this December

- Posted in Weather Facts by

The high temperature on December 9th hit 80º at Phoenix Sky Harbor. This temperature is 14º above average for this time of year, and just 4º away from the record of 84º set back in 1981.

This also marks the second December day this year with a high temperature of 80º+. Since 1896, there have only been 15 years (now including this year) that have seen two or more 80º+ days in December.

  • 7 days with 80º+: 1980
  • 5 days with 80º+: 1939, 1940, 1950
  • 4 days with 80º+: 1965
  • 3 days with 80º+: 1938
  • 2 days with 80º+: 1917, 1946, 1949, 1977, 1981, 2003, 2010, 2017, 2020

Looking at the total number of days in the weather record for December, there have only been 63 days out of 3,853 days with a high of 80º+. In other words, these temperatures are reasonably rare.

If you don't like this December "heat", temperatures will drop back into the 60s tomorrow into the weekend as a storm system moves through the state.

Phoenix hits a high of 80º on Dec 7th

- Posted in Weather Facts by

The average high temperature for December 7th is 67º, but this year, Phoenix Sky Harbor hit 80º. The record for the day is 83º, which was set back in 1938.

So how rare are 80º days in December? The last time Phoenix had an 80º+ temperature in December was back in 2017, and before that it was in 2013. Since 1896, when records began in Phoenix, there have been 31 years with a high of 80º+ in December.

Another way to examine how rare this is, look at the total number of days. Out of 3,851 December days on record, only 62 of them have seen a high of 80º+. That's only 1.6% of December days!

The most number of days in December with a high of 80º+ was 7, set back in 1980.

High temperatures are forecast to be right around 80º tomorrow as well, which would make it the 2nd day this year with a high of 80º+ in December. Only 14 years have had 2 or more days with high temperatures of 80º+ in December (see list below).

  • 7 days: 1980
  • 5 days: 1939, 1940, 1950
  • 4 days: 1965
  • 3 days: 1938
  • 2 days: 1917,1946,1949,1977,1981,2003,2010,2017

Feeling hot? You are not alone!

On August 9th, Phoenix Sky Harbor broke the 110º mark for the 34th time so far this year! This breaks the old record of 33 days, which was set in 2011. The average number of 110º+ days stands at 19.

Keep in mind, the Valley of the Sun broke this record on Aug 9th and the average last 110º+ day is not until August 26th, so still plenty of time to rack up more very hot days. In fact, looking at the current forecast, the tally this year could be at 40 days by the end of next weekend.

Stay cool!

July 23, 2020: Rare Phoenix Temperature Event

- Posted in Weather Facts by

*****NOTE: The temperature after this post was written dropped to 86º at 11:59pm. This means the difference in high/low for the day was 12º, which has happened 1,262 times. Not nearly as impressive as only 297 times.***

If you are looking for a dose of random weather facts, you have come to the right place. Today it's all about the high and low temperature difference! And there is one fact that I think weather nerd or not, you will find interesting!

The high temperature at Phoenix Sky Harbor on July 23, 2020, was 98º, with a low of 90º. That's a difference of just 8º. Having a temperature range that small has only occurred 297 times since records began in 1896. In other words, in 45,494 days of weather records, it has only happened on 0.65% of the days!

Ok, now to the very strange part!

Having an 8º difference has only happened five times in July since records began. Ok, great, not that exciting... well, just wait... out of those five times, three have occurred on July 23rd! Very interesting, don't you think? Slim odds of that happening!

Just in case you were wondering, the largest difference in high and low temperature comes in at 48º, which has occurred twice. On June 13, 1917, the high temperature was 107º with a low of 59º. On April 17, 1919, the high was 96º with a low of 48º!

The smallest difference occurred on February 7, 1941 with a high of 52º and a low of 50, just a two-degree difference!

There you have it, your daily dose of useless weather facts! You may now return to your regularly scheduled programming!

Uncommon Weather Event in Phoenix - Did You Notice?

- Posted in Weather Facts by

Today (March 30th), the high temperature at Phoenix Sky Harbor was 77º, with a low temperature of 53º. If you asked what the high and low were yesterday, you would get the same answer. While nothing might sound too exciting with this, let's go to the numbers.

Since records began in 1896 to today, it has been 45,379 days. Out of those days, Phoenix has recorded the exact same high and low temperature on back-to-back days a total of 590 times. That is only 1.3% of all days on record!

So far this year, Phoenix has already recorded five of these days, and we are only three months into the year! The most recorded in a given year was ten, which occurred in both 2012 and 1930. The least is one in a year and occurred in 1989, 1980, 1978, and 1919.

Ok, that might still not sound exciting, but to a weather nerd... well, you get the point.

Phoenix: Least 80º+ Degree Days In March In Over 35 Years

- Posted in Weather Facts by

Punxsutawney Phil, back on February 2nd, told the world spring would arrive early, but that was certainly not the case for the Valley of the Sun.

Several storm systems have moved through the state this month, resulting in cool afternoon high temperatures. So far this month, Phoenix Sky Harbor has only recorded a high temperature of 80º or higher on three days (March 5th-7th).

This tally is the lowest number of 80º+ days the Valley has seen in March since 1982! This also ties the record as the third-lowest number of days. The record stands at zero, which occurred in 1973 and 1980. The most number of 80º+ days is 25 and was set in 1934.

With the forecast calling for temperatures to be in the upper 70s through the end of the month, the average high temperature for March will likely be around 74º, which is below the average of 77º.

So the big question: does this mean it will be a cool summer? The short answer: no. Unfortunately, there is no relationship between the average high temperatures in March versus June.

With that said, be sure to enjoy the cool weather while it lasts as there is no doubt the summer will still be hot in Phoenix, even if it happens to end up being below-average.

Keep in mind the average for this time of year is 80º.

Cooler weather is forecast to stick around through the weekend; however, a warming trend will move into the forecast, with temperatures nearing the 90-degree mark by the middle of next week.
